Subhasis Chaudhuri received his B.Tech. degree in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1985. He received the M.Sc. (in 1987) and the Ph.D. (in 1990) degrees, both in Electrical Engineering, respectively, from the University of Calgary, Canada and the University of California, San Diego. He joined the electrical engineering department at IIT, Bombay in 1990 and is currently serving as an Institute Chair Professor and the Dean of International Relations. He served as the head of the department during the period 2005-2008. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, the Technical University of Munich and the University of Paris XI.
Academic and Research Achivements: Chaudhuri works in the area of computer vision, image processing and video analysis. He has contributed significantly to research topics like motion estimation, restoration, computational photography and biomedical image analysis. His most fundamental contributions are in the areas of depth recovery from defocused observations and generation of super-resolution images. He has also published extensively in the areas of visualization of hyperspectral images, content-based image retrievals, and object tracking. He has also been working in the area of computational haptics.
Other Contributions: Chaudhuri has served as an associate editor for the journals IEEE Transactions in Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and IET Computer Vision. He has been serving in the editorial board of International Journal of Computer Vision. He has served as the program chair for International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) held in Beijing in 2005. He was also the Program Chair for ICVGIP 2006 and the General Chair for ICVGIP 2002.
Awards and Distinctions: Chaudhuri is a fellow of the IEEE, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. He is the recipient of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award for the year 2001, the Swarnajayanti Fellowship in 2003, and the S.S. Bhatnagar Prize in engineering sciences for the year 2004. He was awarded the J.C. Bose National Fellowship in 2008. He is also the recipient of Prof. SVC Aiya Memorial Award for excellence in research from IETE (2001), G.D. Birla Award for Scientific Research (2010). NASI-Reliance Industries Platinum Jubilee Award for Application Oriented Innovation (2011) and Prof. H.H. Mathur Excellence in Research Award from IIT Bombay (2008).
