Ramprakash Gandhi obtained his MSc (Hons) (1955) and PhD (1959) from Panjab University and a second PhD (1965) from Southampton University. He was post-doctoral Fellow at Southampton University and at the Cambridge University (1965-66). He was Head, Chemistry Department (1979-82) and acted as Coordinator, School of Bioscience and Bio-engineering at IIT, Delhi. He has been Head of NMR Central Facility at IIT Delhi since 1982. He was a Visiting Professor at the Polytechnic University at Brooklyn, New York (1989-90), and subsequent to retirement from IIT, was CSIR Emeritus Scientist.

Academic and Research Achievements: Gandhi's notable contributions include comprehensive work on stereo-more and periselectivity in lanthanide NMR shift reagent - catalysed cycloaddition reactions involving allenic esters and a rationale based on preferred rotameric ester conformations determined through 1H & 13C relaxation time (T1), nOe and 1H & 13C ASIS and UV spectroscopy, development of photochemical routes to bicyclo [4.4.0.12.4] undecane system, bis-A-homo-4-aza-steroids and 13,17-seeo-steroids (based on reactions of enamides, imides), D-homosteroids, fused steroidal aziridines and some unique dioxetanes, determination of electronic effects transmission in 2-oxa-bicyclo [4.4.0] decane system using NMR 13C SCS analysis, studies on unusual reorganization reactions based on diarylazabutadiences and novel and unequivocal syntheses of a large number of multinuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, aza bi-and tricyclics, and terpenoids. He has published over 70 papers in different peer reviewed journals.

Other Contributions: Gandhi has made several academic visits to different labs under INSA-French Academy of Sciences International Exchange Programme. Prior to joining IIT, Delhi he had built up a large active research group in organic chemistry at Kurukshetra University.
