Kalyan Banerjee obtained MBBS (1961) and PhD (1968) degrees from the University of Calcutta. His areas of specialization are general virology, viral immunology and epidemiology of viral diseases. He was Assistant Director (1973-76), Deputy Director (1976-83), Scientist (Director's grade) (1983-88), and Director (1988), National Institute of Virology, Pune.

Academic and Research Achievements: Banerjee discovered and characterized three new viruses, viz. Barur, Chobargorge and Sripur. He described a method for the growth of dengue group of viruses in tissue culture and explained the phenomenon of paradoxical mortality in animals. Banerjee also identified genetic markers of dengue viruses, for the first time, in the whole group of arboviruses. He prepared Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) vaccine in tissue culture and assessed its immunological response in humans. Banerjee carried out extensive field studies on the epidemiology of dengue, KFD and chikungunya viruses, as well as Japanese encephalitis (JE). He prepared killed tissue culture vaccine against JE. Currently he is preparing monoclonal antibodies against CHIK viruses. He demonstrated differences among JE Virus strains through biological, immunological and RNA fingerprinting methods. His other contributions was understanding the spread of HIV infection in western India.

Other Contributions: Banerjee was actively associated with the National Scientific Advisory Group of Experts for WHO/UNDP Programme for vaccine development; WHO Expert Advisory Panel on virus diseases; International Committee of DBT; Governing Body of National Facility for Animal Tissue and Cell Culture of DBT; National Committee on Zoonosis; and Scientific Advisory Committee of several medical research institutes. He is a Member of New York Academy of Sciences.

Awards and Honours: Banerjee is a recipient of Shakuntala Amirchand Prize of ICMR (1970); Silver Jubilee Oration Award of Trivandrum Medical College (1980); Dr PN Raju Oration Award of ICMR (1982); Vasu Memorial Oration Award (1990); Dr Gharpure Memorial Oration Award of Haffkine Institute (1991); and JB Chatterjee Memorial Award from School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata (1993). He is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad; Indian Virological Society, and National Academy of Medical Sciences (India).
